Stevie Wonder Special

LadyM 2022/01/30

Stevie Wonder. I want to know if there is anyone out there that doesn’t know his music. You can hear it every time you turn on the TV or radio. I can sing his songs right away because I've heard them so often being that he is such a famous singer/song writer.

Wonder was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan. He lost his sight as a child so he has had to live life blind, but he also had a great gift that began showing around that time. That gift was music. Wonder made his recording debut at the age of 11.

Some of his famous songs are…(1969) "My Cherie Amour", (1970) "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m yours", (1972) "You are the sunshine of my life", (1973) "Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing", "Higher Ground", "Superstition", (1976) "Isn’t she lovely", (1980) "Happy Birthday", "Lately", (1984) "I just called to say I love you", (1985) "Part time lover"... and many more. His music is a unique blend of R&B, Soul, Gospel and sometimes Jazz.

He has made the Top 40 charts 46 times, with 28 Top 10 hits and 10 #1's. He also collaborated with many artists like Paul McCartney, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Baby Face, Beyonce, India Arie, Kirk Franklin, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Celine Dion, and Ariana Grande, etc.

Stevie has won a total of 25 Grammy awards including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. I can’t name all of his awards but he has received several such as “US Distinguished service award”(1969 : US Government), “President Award”(1974 : National Assn. of Recording Merchandisers), “Best original song - "I just called to say I love you" (1985 : Academy Award), Lifetime Achievement Award (2000 : Rhythm & blues Foundation pioneer awards), Living Legend Award (2010 : California’s African American museum), The president’s medal of freedom (2014 : bestowed by an act of U.S. congress - The highest civilian award of the United States)...There are many others as well.

Steve's timeless hits have inspired generations of musicians and still do. Even myself; I listen to and sing his songs.
We all love his music. I even went to see one of his live concerts once. I still remember how much I was excited to see him. It was Christmas season, and he asked to audience "Could anybody can sing a Japanese Christmas song for me?" I was sitting about 30 seats from the stage but of course I was jumping, hold my hands up high, and screaming to him. He chose (his staff chose) a different woman but I wished that I could have sung with him on stage!

Currently, we are also teaching vocal lessons from the United States to students living in Japan and the United States using Skype through the Internet.
