Coolio is an American rapper, actor, and record producer, best known for his hit single "Gangsta's Paradise" from the soundtrack of the 1995 film "Dangerous Minds". Born on August 1, 1963 in Compton, California as Artis Leon Ivey Jr., Coolio began his music career in the late 1980s and achieved mainstream success in the mid-1990s.

Coolio grew up in a tough neighborhood in Compton and attended Compton Community College before dropping out to pursue his music career full-time. He began performing with the group WC and the Maad Circle before going solo in 1994 with his debut album "It Takes a Thief". The album included the hit single "Fantastic Voyage", which peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Coolio's big break came with the release of "Gangsta's Paradise" in 1995. The song was featured on the soundtrack of "Dangerous Minds", a movie about an inner-city high school teacher who tries to inspire her troubled students. "Gangsta's Paradise" spent three weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

Following the success of "Gangsta's Paradise", Coolio released several more albums throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. These include "My Soul" (1997), "Coolio.com" (2001), and "El Cool Magnifico" (2002). Although none of these albums achieved the same level of commercial success as his earlier work, they still showcased Coolio's talents as both a rapper and producer.

In addition to his music career, Coolio has also appeared in several movies and television shows over the years. Some of his notable acting roles include appearances in films such as "Batman & Robin" (1997) and "Daredevil" (2003), and TV shows like "Celebrity Big Brother UK" (2009) and "Food Network Star" (2012).

Despite some personal troubles over the years, including legal issues related to drugs and firearms possession, Coolio has remained a popular figure in both music and entertainment. He continues to perform live shows around the world and remains beloved by fans for hits like "Gangsta's Paradise".

Overall, Coolio is an important figure in American hip-hop history. His contributions to rap music helped shape a genre that would go on to become one of America's most influential cultural exports. Through his unique style and memorable hits like "Gangsta's Paradise", he solidified himself as an icon whose influence can still be felt today.
