Brandy was born in a family with a musical background. She is the first cousin of the famous American rapper Snoop Dogg.
In 1994, she released her first album, self-titled “Brandy”. The album features hit singles “Baby”, “I Wanna Be Down”, “Brokenhearted”, and sold 6 million copies worldwide. The effort peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, at number 20 on Billboard Hot 200 Album chart, and became quadruple platinum.
In 1996 she acted in the U.P.N. sitcom, “Moesha,” and she won her first award, the N.A.A.C.P. Image Award. In 1998, her single duet with R&B artist Monica, titled “The Boy Is Mine” became one of the best selling female duets of all time, and she released her second album “Never say Never,” which won her first Grammy Award.
